3 Ways To Hire Better HVAC Technicians

It’s certainly no question that locating and hiring high quality HVAC technicians seems to be a major issue for contractors in 2021. In this article, I’m going to show you 3 ways to hire better HVAC technicians. This tips were provided by Kyle Gargaro from the ACHR News during a podcast recording.

Before diving into these tips, I wanted to share some additional insights from other industry experts. I recently ran a poll on LinkedIn regarding the biggest challenges facing the HVAC industry. And though hiring technicians was definitely the number one concern, there were several responses suggesting that the current manufacturing shortage is presenting challenges. Here are some responses from the poll.

In regard to the labor shortage:

“Hiring technicians. Absolutely zero question. This is the one on the list that takes time to build and has a long term impact on the company if not being worked on today.” -Matthew Tyner, Williams Comfort Air

“Definitely technicians and installers to keep up with the growth! If you’re not figuring out a way to grow them, you’re going to get left behind.” -Anthony Pascucci, Sansone Air Conditioning

In regard to the equipment shortage:

“Definitely hard choice between hiring techs and equipment storage, but we’ve seen more issues recently with the equipment shortage.” Joy Payne, Champion Comfort Experts

So, how can HVAC companies hire better technicians?

Tip #1 – Get Involved With Your Local Trade School

Trade schools are required to have a board of advisors. By getting involved with the curriculum you can shape the way that the apprentices are learning the trade. This, in turn, can help you create a feeder program where you can have field-ready technicians upon completion.

Tip #2 – Build A Culture People Want To Work For

This is something that is easier said than done, as everyone is always talking about having the “best” culture. But it boils down to building a company where your employees are treated with respect, paid appropriately, and continue to receive training. Company cultures become toxic when employees don’t feel challenged or appreciated.

On top of those 3 things, here are some other ideas for building an engaged staff:

  • Have monthly company breakfast
  • Have friendly competitions/giveaways
  • Offer benefits other than just pay (tool allowance, company truck, gas card, etc.)

Tip #3 – Hire Military Veterans

Hiring military veterans, while it may require some upfront training, can play a long term benefit for your company. Though they may not have expertise in the HVAC trade immediately after leaving the armed forces, they typically have other desirable skills such as discipline, good work ethic, and critical problem solving skills. In my experience, I’ve found that those are harder to teach than technical skills. There are several programs out there, such as the DoD Skillbridge Program, Vets For Trades, and Vets Go Global – just to name a few.

Did I Miss Any Practical Tips?

Are there any additional tips that you would add to the list? I’d love to hear your thoughts. Leave a comment down below to help me continue growing this guide.
